Civil War Photographs |
A nearly perfect ca. 1863-64 full-standing portrait of Artilleryman displaying
unit insignia on cap: 9th Artillery / Co. B.
Renaissance-style painted backdrop features a hill town with Civil War
encampment across the river (note Sibley tent in foreground). Pattern on
floor, continued in a primitive way into the backdrop, leads us to deep space
with a "nuts & bolts" simplicity characteristic of American art. Many
artillery units were stationed around Washington, D.C. to defend the capital
from Confederate invasion.
Price: $100.
