Civil War Photographs |
Abner Doubleday, Union General. Credited by many as
the inventor of baseball when a young man at Cooperstown, NY (a claim equally
contested by others), Gen. Doubleday is noted as firing the first cannon in
defense of Fort Sumter in 1861. He commanded a division at Antietam and
Fredericksburg and headed the I Corps at Gettysburg after the death of General
Reynolds on July 1, 1863. Carte de visite portrait (posed
with his wife) by Matthew Brady published by E&HT Anthony, an unusual "clock
portrait" rarely seen these days, even less often available for purchase.
Price: SOLD.
