Pauline Cushman: Actress, Spy. Born in New
Orleans, she moved to New York City at 18 to be a stage actress. While
touring in Kentucky she pretended to be a Southern sympathizer but was in
reality a commissioned Union spy rendering valuable intelligence to the Federal
army. Captured and sentenced to death, before the sentence could be
carried out Major Cushman was rescued by Union troops. CDV ca. 1864-65, published by E.&H.T.
